I watched the most amazing David Attenborough special called ‘The Life of Insects’ the other night and was completely mesmerised by the section on the migration of the Monarch butterfly.  I seriously could not stop saying ‘wow’ out loud at my t.v.  I’m terrible at retaining factual information (though I always remember the pretty pictures), but from what I gathered, MILLIONS of these beauties travel from Canada to Mexico every year to attach themselves to high up tree branches in the Michoacan state.  They stay there over the Northern winter, where the temperatures are obviously much warmer in the south;  the ground sees frost over night, but they are safe from the cold up in the treetops.  Their migration coincides with Mexican Day of the Dead festival and these butterflies are thought to be the bodies of deceased relatives coming back to say ‘hello’ ‘hola’ once a year.  The images I saw in this special of the butterflies waking from hibernation in the warmer temperatures- 4 months later- is absolutely spectacular!  I would feel very lucky to witness this in real life some day.

I love the simple beauty of a Monarch butterfly.  They remind me of home, kind of like a robin.  Actually, they really remind me of a couple of summers ago, stand-up paddle boarding along Lake Ontario in Canada and hundreds of them flying all over the lake.  *Plus, orange has sort of been a theme colour on the blog this month 😉DCIM100GOPRO
